NASP Elections
The elections are complete and Philip Lazarus from Florida and Ronald Benner from Connecticut will join the NASP Executive Council in July 2010 as President-Elect and Treasurer respectively. NASP members voted at the highest levels in six years and elected these two officers plus 17 state delegates.
Phil Lazarus is an Associate Professor and Director of the School Psychology Training Program at Florida International University and has been involved in training graduate students and serving as an advocate for children and our profession for over thirty years. Phil was a founder and past Chairperson of the National Emergency Assistance Team and has provided on-site assistance in the aftermath of school shootings and natural disasters in the United States and many countries. He was co-editor of Best Practices in School Crisis Prevention and Intervention and has written many articles for NASP and other scholarly publications. He has presented numerous workshops and speeches at conferences across the U.S.
Ron Benner brings a 40 year career in education including 16 ½ years as a special education teacher and 22 years as a school psychologist. He has been treasurer of the Connecticut school psychology association for the last ten years and has held leadership roles in a variety of areas at NASP including Connecticut Delegate, Coordinator of the special interest group CTASP, Co-Chair of Professional Development, and Listservs Moderator. Ron also started the NEA School Psychologists Caucus, in the NEA-Representative Assembly, so school psychologists would have an active voice reaching NEA leaders across the country.
Both Phil and Ron are excited to bring a variety of experiences and ideas to the NASP Executive Council.
Additionally NASP members elected 17 state delegates. In many instances states had contested elections in their states which contributed to the higher vote total. All candidates should be congratulated for seeking elected positions within the NASP leadership.
Next year’s election cycle will begin this summer with self nomination for President-Elect, Secretary, and 17 state delegates. The Delegate Assembly will be determining whether we will have a Primary in the election 2011 cycle. Watch the NASP web page, the CQ, and other NASP publications for more information.
