The NASP Workgroup on Gay,
Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Issues
Lisa Persinger, NCSP, Chair
Thomas Schanding, Cochair
This workgroup was established to identify actions NASP can take
to fulfill the spirit of NASP's recently revised Position
Statement on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (GLBTQ)
Youth, which calls for
providing a safe and secure educational atmosphere for sexual minority
youth through interventions, program development, and research.
Objectives of the NASP Workgroup on GLB Issues:
- To develop articles for Communiqué, School Psychology
Review, and The Guidance Channel on GLB youth and related
school issues as well as to develop handouts for youth, parents,
school psychologists, and other educators.
- To provide reviews of books and articles via the Communiqué and
the NASP website to keep school psychologists, educators, and parents
abreast of current research related to GLB youth.
- To provide NASP members with current research and other relevant
information on GLB youth issues through presentations and special
sessions at the annual NASP convention.
- To disseminate training modules on GLB youth issues for university
graduate level psychology programs.
- To build and maintain communication and cooperation within NASP
with the NASP leadership and other work groups, task forces, and
interest groups.
- To build alliances with other organizations which support GLB
youth such as: American Psychological Association's Committee on
Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Concerns; Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education
Network (GLSEN); Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (P-FLAG);
Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund; National Youth Advocacy
Coalition (NYAC); National Education Association's Gay & Lesbian
Caucus; National Gay and Lesbian Health Association and Family Pride.
- To monitor and respond to pertinent state and federal legislative
initiatives and support those which improve the lives of GLB students.
