Renewing Your NCSP
A hallmark of the NCSP system has always been its promotion of high quality continuing professional development. For many years, school psychologists who hold the NCSP have been required to engage in activities designed to maintain, expand, and extend their professional training and skills. To further encourage high quality CPD, the NCSP Board is instituting two new CPD content standards that will be phased in over the next few years.
1. Training in Ethics and Professional Practices - January 2009. If your NCSP credential is due for renewal in January 2009 and beyond, you must attest to the completion of 3 hours of professional development in ethics or professional practices.
2. Training from a NASP or APA Approved Provider - January 2010. The NASP-Approved Provider system was created to assist school psychologists in obtaining quality professional development. NASP Approved Providers must demonstrate that their offerings align with NASP standards, are provided by qualified professionals, and are intended to enhance professional competencies, skills or knowledge. NCSPs whose renewal will occur in January 2010 and beyond must obtain one-third (25) of their continuing professional development credits through a NASP- or APA-Approved Provider.

The NCSP renewal process has been made easier. Effective March 2007, NASP activated an online renewal function so that your entire renewal submission can occur online.
If you use the online renewal process, please do not also mail in a hard copy of your renewal and payment information to SunTrust Bank. Completing
your renewal online and then submitting your paperwork to the bank will result in a double charge on your checking or credit card account.
If you prefer, you can still use the older method of downloading your renewal forms and mail them to the address provided. These forms were revised in September 2003.
You will need both of the following documents to renew via mail:
Please remember to keep a file with evidence of your continuing education activities to submit in case your file is chosen randomly for an audit.
Please note: If your NCSP credential has lapsed, you can no longer represent
yourself as an NCSP, including in person, via reports, or through business
cards. It is important that you renew on time to prevent a lapse in your
certification.
The NCSP must be renewed every three years with 75 hours of continuing
professional development (CPD) activities. The hours are contact hours
and there are a variety of ways to earn these hours. Detailed information
is listed in the certification renewal packet.
It is expected that school psychologists will enhance their skills in
a variety of areas. Although activities covering specific skill areas
are not required for the NCSP renewal, expanding one's knowledge in less
familiar areas is an important aspect of professional growth. Continuing
professional development should involve a variety of learning activities
covering a wide range of topics.
