Professional Practice Domains of Competence

Professional growth workshops have been selected to represent the range of professional practice domains (PDs) for school psychologists that are contained in the NASP Standards for Credentialing of School Psychologists.

PD1
Data-based decision making and accountability: Workshops designed to help school psychologists use assessment techniques to define current problem areas, strengths, and needs (at the individual, group, or systems level) and to measure the effects of the decisions that result from the problem-solving process.

PD2
Interpersonal communication, collaboration, and consultation: Workshops designed to improve school psychologists’ skills in collaborating and consulting with others at the individual, group, or systems level.

PD3
Effective instruction and development of cognitive/academic skills: Workshops designed to increase school psychologists’ skills in developing cognitive and academic goals for students, implementing plans to assist students in achieving those goals, and monitoring students’ progress toward the goals.

PD4
Socialization and development of behavioral competencies: Workshops designed to increase school psychologists’ skills in developing behavioral, affective, and/or developmental goals for students; implementing plans to assist students in achieving those goals; and monitoring students’ progress toward the goals.

PD5
Student diversity in development and learning: Workshops designed to improve school psychologists’ awareness, appreciation, and skills in working with individuals and groups from a variety of racial, cultural, ethnic, experiential, socioeconomic, gender-related, and linguistic backgrounds.

PD6
School structure, organization, and climate: Workshops designed to increase school psychologists’ skills in understanding schools as systems and in facilitating changes in school structure and policies.

PD7
Prevention, wellness promotion, and crisis intervention: Workshops designed to improve school psychologists’ knowledge of child development and psychopathology, prevention activities, and crisis intervention.

PD8
Home/school/community collaboration: Workshops designed to increase school psychologists’ knowledge of family influences on students’ wellness, learning, and achievement and to increase their skills in forming partnerships among families, schools, and communities.

PD9
Research and program evaluation: Workshops designed to increase school psychologists’ skills in understanding research design and statistics and to improve their ability to translate research into practice.

PD10
Legal issues, ethical practice, and professional development: Workshops designed to increase school psychologists’ knowledge of ethical, professional, and legal standards.

PD11
Information technology: Workshops designed to increase school psychologists’ knowledge of information sources and technology in ways that safeguard or enhance the quality of their services.

Skill Levels
I. Introduction: Aimed at participants with no real background in the topic area.
II. Intermediate: Aimed at participants with limited background in the topic area.
III. Advanced: Aimed at participants with some theoretical/practical background in the topic area.
